This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
