The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously flexible, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
