As any major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
